Cultural Understanding

Creating a motivated, high‑performing organisation starts with understanding how people work, communicate and learn. I help organisations gain clarity on both their cultural dynamics and their learning environment — examining the behaviours, norms and unwritten rules that shape everyday experience, alongside the systems, programmes and development pathways that support capability and progression.

Through cultural analysis and organisational learning and development reviews, I provide evidence‑based insight into what enables performance, what creates friction and how culture and learning can better align to support inclusion, engagement and long‑term organisational success.

This work can be undertaken across a whole organisation or with an individual team.

  • Assess current learning & development options, leadership pathways and training content to identify gaps, strengths and opportunities for improvement.

  • This leads to review of development systems, processes and stakeholder perspectives to understand how learning is embedded and how it can better support organisational performance.

Case study: Russell Group University-  Learning and development strategic review .

I led a comprehensive learning and development review for a Russell group university, examining how effectively the existing learning and development offer supported capability, progression and a positive learning culture. I interviewed a cross section of academic and operational senior stakeholders, facilitated cross‑departmental focus groups and reviewed leadership programmes, training content and development pathways to understand how learning was currently experienced across the institution.

Through this analysis, I identified strong foundations in academic leadership development, alongside gaps in consistency, accessibility and alignment with the university’s evolving strategic priorities. I produced a detailed report outlining key themes, opportunities and practical recommendations to adapt the Learning & Development offer, strengthen leadership capability and embed learning more effectively across teams.

This work can be undertaken across a whole organisation or across a number of  teams who are working together on a permanent basis.

  • I conduct interviews, run focus groups and analyse behavioural diagnostics to uncover lived cultural patterns, sources of friction and areas of strength.

  • This leads to reviewing work practices, leadership behaviours and cross‑functional dynamics to identify what supports performance and where cultural alignment needs strengthening.

Case study: Law firm -   Cultural analysis

I partnered with a leading law firm to conduct a cultural analysis focused on understanding how behaviours, norms and unwritten rules were shaping collaboration, leadership impact and day‑to‑day working practices.   In order to support the firm achieve a new strategic direction, I worked with the partners through  a series of stakeholder interviews, behavioural diagnostics and facilitated conversations.  This analysis surfaced the cultural patterns that supported performance and those that were creating friction across practice groups.  The work highlighted differences in communication styles, expectations of leadership, and a divide in beliefs between established  partners and new partners.

I provided clear, evidence‑based recommendations to strengthen inclusion, improve cross‑team collaboration and align behaviours with the firm’s strategic goals. This analysis helped the organisation build a behavioural strategy that supported the firms growth and engaged all partners.
